Reflective practice

Reflective practice, also known as group supervision, is a group process that helps us to critically examine our actions and relationships within work.  It helps us to grow and develop professionally and personally, by exploring what motivates us to behave and react in the way we do and to make decisions about our future actions, based on a better understanding of ourselves.  It can support us to build resilience and let go of unhelpful patterns of behaviour in order to be well in work and therefore be effective practitioners.  It offers the space to consider how to balance work and life pressures and explore how one impacts on the other.

My role is as a facilitator.  I work from the premise that everyone is competent in their job role and knows it better than I do.  I can support the group to share best practice and find their own solutions by having the benefit of an external perspective.   Hopefully, we move from reflecting on our practice during the group sessions, to reflecting in practice, as an ongoing process.

My experience of delivering reflective practice with staff from a number of charities and schools is that they use it in many different ways:  they share ideas, support each other through challenges, build and strengthen relationships across teams and take their learning back into the workplace.  They value having a space that is for them, where they set the agenda, entirely separate from performance management processes.  It is a confidential space that enables staff to reflect openly on challenging areas of their work practice and their relationships, whether with colleagues or clients.

I work with groups of up to around 6 people, ideally in a location outside of their usual workspace. Sessions are typically two hours long and occur monthly but this is flexible depending on the needs of the group.  I currently charge between £150-£180 per session.

If you are interested in exploring this for yourself or your team, please get in touch.
